Musical Theory

The world's a song
we've labeled it as such
this is the universe
the one verse we know
in a song being sung still
and ever after
far as we know
an epic
full of tragedy and comedy
of love and hate
of impulse and planning
an improvisation?
a story
a thought
expressed the only way we can interpret it
in words and sight and sound and touch and smell
in a heartbeat a million souls become one
in tune to the music of the spheres
that eternal song
but this be just one verse
begun with the sound of drums
and now the sound of trumpets above
and screams below
and all the pain and joy between
but are we the first verse?
is the bridge to come
or perhaps the chorus
a fleeting sense between
this verse and the next
a summary of what's been and what's to come
will there be a reprise?
will we know it when it comes
or be sung the same as before
unknowing and unable to change
no longer improvised
that we've already been sung
and noted as significant
or is that too much pride
to think that we might be more
than just another grain of sand
at the bottom of the ocean
more light manifest
for isn't that but what we are?
lightwaves become soundwaves
this most divine dance
one an expression of the other
all we know a release of light
this release the language of the song
forged in the sun
as it lends its voice to the stars
forged in the sun
we lend it our voices
in pop and rock and indie
in country and folk and metal
in all that we can forge ourselves
we give our light back to the stars
we join together in song
become a part of this verse
and perhaps that's enough
perhaps that's worth all the tragedy
that we're more than what we are
until our verse does end
and another begins in place
but we've lent our voices
let ourselves be heard
and the song goes ever on
that for us the greatest sin
is to remain silent.

The Long Way Round...

It's a new life beginning from the old
neither birth nor death
or rather, not entirely
the living death, the dying life
always in a constant state of change
down to the molecular level
down to a science
to make a fact mean something more
is what it means to be human
to see something where it's not
is what we call sanity, insanity
a matter of perspective
of matter and the sense it makes
or not
we question everything
and everything else
looking so closely we might miss it
when it comes together
are we the sum of our parts
or the parts the sum of us
becoming what we want to be
becoming what we have to be
to survive
evolve
to what we fear most
a nightmare of a dream
is this what we're heading to
destroying something beautiful
corrupting that which works
making mistakes we have to make
because how else would we learn
except at the cost of all
for nothing doesn't matter
isn't matter
the stakes are high
and the take even higher
if we don't fold before we know
and fall for temptation
on the quickest path to what we think we want
as desire turns the wheel
round the wrong corner in destiny's garden
so when we hit that dead end
it's a harder journey back
but more revealing
of ourselves
and of the world
it's a long way down
we have not seen the bottom yet
and if we're lucky
one day we will
and if more so
it won't be too late
because it's a long way up
to appreciate the sky
the air
now that we've been buried
i hope that we can make it back
begin anew
from what has come before
destruction is just another form of creation
but there is such a thing as too much
too fast
where a choice is not a choice at all
where change or die
becomes change and die
it's a fine line we walk
a tightrope between heaven and hell
but it's a choice we can't avoid
in the end
to live forever
or be the architects of our own suicide
oh the humanity
i hope we have it
that we're something better than a plague
or parasite
that bleeds the host dry
and then ourselves
to a science
it's not a race to the bottom of this well
but you wouldn't know it
the way we do
making waste of all we're given
i hope that we can make it back.
